1 Why commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a holiday in the United States (the third Monday in January) commemorates the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr. a Baptist minister who advocated the use of nonviolent means to end segregation and who first came to national fame in 1955 during the African-American bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama.
As the most influential African-American civil rights leader of the 1960s, he was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited discrimination in public accommodations, facilities and employment. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
Almost immediately after his death, there were calls for a national holiday in his honor. Beginning in 1970, many states and cities designated his birthday, January 15, as a holiday. Although legislation for a federal holiday was introduced in Congress as early as 1968, there was enough opposition to prevent its passage for racial and political reasons.
In 1983, legislation was finally passed to designate the third week of January as a federal holiday, and the day was celebrated nationwide for the first time in 1986. The day is usually celebrated with parades and marches and speeches by civil rights and political leaders.
